Well, will you look at this! A blog post and mostly on time. What a crazy, random happenstance. Let’s get to it!

Weekly Word Count: 5,565
So… uh. Yeah. That happened. This last week really felt like I’d settled into my vacation and my brain was ready to get to work after a week of relaxation. I wrote exactly three times, and each session was more productive than the last. If you’re paying close attention, you’ll see that my short story “In Debt to the King Tide” is no longer in the drafting stage. I finished writing it last week and am knee deep in revisions.
I’ve also made some really good strides on the novel and am creeping up to the ACTUAL end of the story. This draft won’t be as long as I’d hoped, but there’s a lot of revision and rewriting that’s going to happen in subsequent drafts. I expect the word count to increase before this book is “done”.
I also read a bit last week. I finished two novellas and an audiobook, so I’m definitely refilling the Story Well. I’ve got a new audiobook going already, as well as a stack of novellas to tackle before I get back to work.
Also, if you haven’t listened in yet, the newest episode of Top Shelf Librarians is out now! Put it in your earholes!
Honorable Mentions
There was a lot to love about last week, and not just the writing progress. I spent time with one of my best friends, talking about our gardens and making plans about our homes and dinners and parties to come. It was a delightful morning.
I went out and sang karaoke for the first time in months. While I know the activity can be pretty divisive, I LOVE karaoke. I love music, I love to sing, and I love watching people overcome their fears and having fun. So that was very nice.
I also got a haircut and color, so I’m fresh and feeling more like myself since before this whole house renovation started. And, speaking of the construction zone that is my life, our cabinets are painted and the countertops go in a week from today! We are SO CLOSE to having our house back, y’all and it can’t come soon enough.
And, of course, the garden is a daily delight and source of joy. I can’t wait to harvest fresh veggies and prep them in our brand new kitchen. Until then, I hang out on my little square of the deck and watch it grow.
So, What's Next?
- Write at least 3x
- Read Something
- Enjoy final week of “summer”
Basically, don’t fix what ain’t broke. This is my last week off before I start my new job and I want to enjoy it. But I also need to get this rough draft done this week so I can start revising it. I have pitches at the Willamette Writers conference in the first week of August, and I’d rather not pitch an incomplete book.
I mean, I know I can’t revise a novel in two weeks AND work 40hrs/week. I know that. But I at least want to get the process started, I want to get a grasp on what this book will be, so I can speak to that in my pitches.
Which reminds me, I need to practice my pitches…
ANYWAY, that’s the plan. That’s what’s up and what’s good. So let’s get to it!
Until next time, Bloggarts!
