This month we have a very special episode of Top Shelf Librarians. Not only did we launch our first ever poll (listen on Spotify to vote) but we’re also taking part in a bit of a challenge. September is The Trevor Project’s Back to School Reading Challenge fundraiser! Basically, Top Shelf Librarians have teamed up to take on the challenge to read 20 minutes a day, every day in September in order raise funds for the world’s largest suicide prevention and mental health organizations for LGBTQ+ youth.  Now, as much as we love Trader Joe’s and Taco Bell, they aren’t ACTUALLY sponsors (sorry to burst your bubble). We don’t read ads and haven’t monetized the show in any way in almost two years! We make the show as a way to hang out and share a glimpse of the library life with anyone who will listen – we make absolutely…

Well folks, it’s what it says on the tin. The new episode is out today! We brought on a lovely guest (and Library Boss Bitch) so I know you’re going to like this one.  I’m at the Willamette Writers Conference, and having an awesome time getting to finally meet all these wonderful writers I’ve met virtually over the past two years. I’m sure I’ll have a full write up of the weekend out sometime next week. Until then, Blogland enjoy the show and have a great weekend! BZ

That’s right, Blogland! Acceptances – plural! I’ve been sitting on this news for a little while and I’m so excited to finally share it with you! The First Back in May, I received the acceptance letter for a short story called “Bell Biv Derailed,” which will appear in LOLcraft: A Compendium of Eldritch Humor from Dragon’s Roost Press this Fall! You can read about the anthology so far, and check out Dragon’s Roost’s other publications here. As I get updates on publication date and ordering, I’ll be sure to share! I’m really excited for this one. This story is a strange, fun one and I can’t wait to see what my fellow writers have come up with. Horror/Comedy is one of my favorite genres, so I’m excited for this anthology as both writer and reader. The Second You may have seen on twitter (or my other, personal socials) that I…

With two hosts doing their best Carmen San Diego impressions, the remaining hosts are doing their damndest to get the show back on track.  Buckle up and jump into our time machine with us so we can talk about June! There’s a lot of pirate talk (again) and it’s Pride Month so there’s more than the usual dose of queer content. Enjoy! Ready to have all your preconceived notions about librarians ruined forever? Listen to Top Shelf Librarians here!

Turns out, scheduling a time for four adult humans to get together for a couple hours is almost impossible. Even only once a month! We’re sorry this episode is so late, but I can promise that you won’t have to wait nearly so long for the next two! Hurray! So, if you’d like to listen to adult library workers talk about booze and books, why not give Top Shelf Librarians a listen? You won’t be sorry… Okay, you *might* be sorry, but you’ll also laugh a lot, so it’s not all bad!

This post probably should have happened yesterday, but there was absolutely no juice left in the tank to talk about anything even remotely writing related. Also, we found out we’d been exposed to COVID yesterday and Trevor tested positive, so I really viewed the day as one of rest and resetting. Today is a day of action, I think. We’re quarantining through the first week of good weather here in like, 10 months, so I’m sunbathing on the front porch as I write this. I’m going to write this post, work on this month’s newsletter, and then do some choring around the house so Trevor doesn’t have to convalesce in a sty. But, first things first, how did The Longest Day go? The Longest Day So, I’ve already had a whole blog post introducing the idea – I won’t rehash all that here. But, to sum up, a bunch of…

I have news. News I can’t talk about yet. News that I want to talk about, very very badly. I think it feels more important than it is because I *can’t* tell you about it yet. And also because there were a few months there where I really thought my writing life was fizzling out. We all go through that, right? The imposter syndrome? When the words won’t come and the rejections pile up, and a little voice starts to whisper, “maybe you are as bad as you think.” and “maybe this is the end. Just give it up.” But you don’t. You don’t give up. You keep staring at manuscripts and tapping at keys until you meander your way through a book. You open submission emails, swiping away rejections until one finally says, “we really enjoyed this story!” Those emails are a breath of fresh air. Validation when you’re…

This is the first post on the new website! If you’re new here, welcome! If you’re migrating from the old blog site, welcome back and thanks for following me into this new virtual space. I expect to have a few kinks and bugs to sort out (building this puppy wasn’t as easy as the internet would have you believe), so bear with me in the next few weeks. I can’t imagine customizing this site if I hadn’t already used WordPress for the last decade, but I’m really happy with how the site turned out. If you’re a long time reader, you know I like to update the look of the blog each year, and since I skipped last year I figured I ought to go big this year! I’ll still be posting with my usual erratic frequencies and being my usual weird self. Don’t worry. The content will not change,…
